Good bad horror flicks

// March 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view Movies:- There’s nothing better than a good bad horror flick. But how to tell the genuinely eye-watering from the merely pathetic? Forkparty can help. “Not only are these movies not scary, they’re actually some of the funniest movies ever made in the horror genre”, it says. Below are its top bottom three. Head over to the site for the remaining five. “Cabin Fever is definitely one of our favorite horror films because of the elaborately cheesy dialogue, the random and awkward interactions between the characters, and, well, how they initially react to the first sign of the disease. Watch as these wild kids tear each other apart! It rules!” And > > > “Scoring a wildly high 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Wicker Man is a truly terrible horror flick that becomes incredibly enjoyable experience if you’re in the right frame of mind when you sit down to watch it. Nicholas Cage’s acting is sub-par compared to… well, actually it’s just Nicholas Cage being himself on screen.” And > > > “One of the most bizarrely horrifying and sickening films ever, Cannibal Holocaust, is based around the story of a group of people going to the amazon to explore, while high on drugs, slaughtering the villagers for fun, and senselessly murdering animals. Cannibal Holocaust was banned in multiple countries due to showing real animals being killed.” We’ve seen The Wicker Man and it it, Cage uses both of his facial expressions. Only 23% of ICANN records accurate: study

// March 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view P2P:- Only 23% of ICANN records are fully accurate, 8% are clearly false, and the rest “fall somewhere in between these two extremes”, it says. About 75% of all records examined “eventually led back to the registrant”, but most of them “contained at least some missing or inaccurate information”, it says, quoting a study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago, which examined the records of the WHOIS service. The study “also identified several barriers to registrant data accuracy, including concerns about privacy, confusion about the information required, lack of clarity in the standard to which information should be entered, no requirement for proof of identity or address, and differences in the approaches used by different registrars”, it says. ICANN has released the report for public comment, saying anyone who wants to respond has until April 15 to do so. - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi February, 2010 Use free p2pnet newsfeeds for your site. MPAA biased in parental guidance ratings

// March 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view MPAA | Movies:- Films made by major Hollywood studios and involving big-name producers and directors consistently get “more lenient parental guidance ratings” from Hollywood’s MPAA than independent distributors or unknown producers and directors, says a study. Researchers from the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business and Yale University School of Management also found films from directors with a history of producing “R”-rated features consistently receive more restrictive ratings, says a joint statement . David Waguespack, assistant professor of management and organization at the Smith School, and co-author Olav Sorenson, professor of organizational behavior at Yale School of Management, “looked at the parental guidance ratings films receive and how those ratings are determined by the Motion Picture Association of America”, it says, continuing > > > Because children account for roughly one-third of film receipts, movies with restricted ratings earn less, on average. When comparing films with similar content, Sorenson and Waguespack found an uneven playing field in the ratings game. They looked at data from Kids-in-Mind, a Web site that provides parents with detailed information on film content, and found a gap between higher and lower status projects in the assignment of ratings to films. “According to our analysis, a film with a moderate degree of sex and violence, for example a Kids-in-Mind score of 12, might be twice as likely to receive an R rating if distributed by an independent rather than one of the major studios,” the statement has Sorenson saying, adding: “And that translates into profits. In our sample, films with a PG or PG-13 earned 76% more at the box office than those with an R.” The researchers attribute the biases to > > > Power, or influence, of the filmmaker or production studio The “halo effect,” or reputation of the producer What they dub proto-typicality – the type-cast effect that has producers who typically receive a certain rating for their work consistently receiving that rating, regardless of content The research will be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Organization Science. - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi joint statement – New Research Finds Bias in Hollywood’s Parental Guidance Ratings for Movies, March 1, 2010 Use free p2pnet newsfeeds for your site. File sharing the ‘reefer event’ of France

// March 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view P2P | Politics:- “Ever ready to surrender to a powerful authority, the French handed over a huge chunk of its legal system to the big media industries and brought in all the laws that the music and movie mongols wanted to prop up their dying business models”, says Nick Farrel in The Inquirer . But, rather than making P2P filesharing disappear, it’s “made it all the more interesting for French teens to get around”, he says. “Nothing makes anything cooler than making something that harms no one illegal” and “P2P so-called ‘piracy’ is fast becoming the reefer and street racing event for teens of the 21st century. No kidding. Look what happened when the Big 4 music industry idiots — sorry, pirates, err, labels — first decided mp3s were the HARBINGERS OF CORPORATE MUSIC DEATH. Well, they were. But only because the wise auld heads who rule Vivendi Universal (France), Sony (Japan), EMI (Britain), and Warner Music (US, but controlled by a Canadian) were too stupid to recognise online distribution as The Way in the digital 21st century. They spent millions of dollars trying to stomp it but succeeded only in publicising it so widely that pretty soon, everyone and his brother was doing it. Now, “CeriseClub, a French internet company, said that illegal file sharing was a ‘national sport’,” says Times Online , continuing: “The French take a sly pleasure in getting round all the systems put in place, and it’s very difficult to persuade them to do otherwise”, it’s quoted as saying. Cross-linking and sale of private data

But everything has its boundaries. Some developments, such as face recognition software for mobile phones with cameras to identify people on the street, send chills down my spine. Even George Orwell couldn’t have dreamt that up.” Her comments “followed similar concerns voiced by Germany’s federal data protection commissioner Peter Schaar last week”, says The Local, adding: “He called for a review of internet search engine company Google’s market dominance and said the company’s Street View mapping technology was a particular threat to privacy.” - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi given his or her permission – Google scoffs at Berlin Street View concerns, February 25, 2010 The Local – Minister warns of growing might of Google, Facebook and Apple, March 1, 1020 Use free p2pnet newsfeeds for your site. Angry Hollywood studios swarm iiNet

// February 25th, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view Movies | P2P | Politics:- In the world of the corporate entertainment industry, if they can’t beat, they swarm you. That’s what’s happening to Australian ISP iiNet which won its case fairly squarely against AFART, Hollywood’s RIAA/MPAA thingy which was ordered to pay legal costs of some $4 million. As  p2pnet said recently, Oz has a lot in common with Britain. They’re both run by politicians in the pockets of the corporate entertainment industry, they both believe they have the right to decide what their citizens should see and hear, they’re both run by limp Labour governments which are on their way out … and they’re both home to half-assed scam outfits called FACT, owned by ie, Disney, News Corp, Time Warner, Viacom, NBC Universal and Sony Pictures, ie, FACT, Farcical Approaches to Copyright Transgressions , or Federation Against Copyright Theft. Now, “34 movie studios will appeal a Federal Court ruling earlier this month that internet provider iiNet could not be held responsible for illegal downloads”, says news.com.au . According to AFART, “the judgment had left an unworkable online environment for content creators and providers, and represented a serious threat to Australia’s digital economy”. “It is more than disappointing and frustrating that the studios have chosen this unproductive path”, iiNet Michal Malone (right) is quoted as saying. “This legal case has not stopped one illegal download and further legal appeals will not stop piracy.” Stay tuned. Hollywood greed holds back VOD in Oz

// February 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view Movies:- According to Paul Uniacke, the man who runs the Video Ezy and Blockbuster video rental chains in Australia, Hollywood greed “is what’s holding back video-on-demand”, says The Australian . Uniacke “launched a scathing attack on studio executives last week as it emerged his company was unwinding its agreement to supply films to the movie download service delivered over an internet connection to the TiVo set-top box” says the story, going on: “Movie studios are still as arrogant as the music moguls were before digital downloads and piracy destroyed them. The only thing that’s protecting the movie studios (from more widespread illegal downloading) now is file size.” The demand minimum guarantees studios from video-on-demand partners in terms of up-front revenue payments “that must be made whether the estimated number of downloads are reached or not, as well as revenue-share arrangements skewed heavily in favour of the studios, made video-on-demand a cost-prohibitive industry”, says The Australian, adding: “Industry sources said studios negotiated different revenue-share arrangements depending on the clout of their partner, but payments could be as high as 70 per cent of a digital movie rental fee to the studio.” (Cheers, Andrew aka Comeoncomcast) - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi The Australian – Greedy studios killing online video-on-demand – Blockbuster boss, February 22, 2010 Use free p2pnet newsfeeds for your site. Say goodbye to the Rock Tsars!

// February 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view Music | P2P:- Devilish Presley are London based independent artists who say they’ve only ever been, or ever wanted to be, on one label — November Tenth Records. Their own. They say they’ve released four albums since 2003 and have racked up more 300 gigs in the UK, including a major support tour with punk legends The Damned. They’ve also played in Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Holland, Romania, France and Southern Ireland and, “ALL of this has been self-financed”. In other words, “We’ve been ahead of the DIY curve since 2003.” With that in mind, “We are therefore more than qualified to give opinions on the a2f2a debate about how artists might survive in a ‘new model’ of the music industry”, says band bass player and singer Jacqui Vixen — “One without the need for labels, the old copyright laws and one that fully embraces file-sharing as a means of promotion.” In an a2f2a comment post , “To us it seems clear that there is now only one choice: we need to see the end of record labels and that old system asap – we have decided that from 2010 on we will be using the CwF + RtB formula favoured by forward thinkers like Mike Masnick at Techdirt” she said, going on: “So far our fans have been quite amazing in their support and all of them are sick to death of being branded ‘thieves’ by the powers that be. “It is quite clear why musicians still cling to the ‘old model’ and that is because every independent act can only ever get so far without falling foul of the illegal control of the “means of promotion” that the Big4 maintained by payola. For years they have stamped out competition which is why they hate the internet and all that goes with it. “This is what forces a lot of artists to still sign one-sided deals and to get shafted, the fact that independent growth is forbidden. ‘Not coming through the right channels old boy’. “We are now living through THE most exciting time for music ever, forget the sixties, forget punk, today and tomorrow are a far better place to be. Well they will be if the ‘Rock Tsars’ aren’t allowed to collude with the major labels and aid them in their efforts to clamp down on the internet and control it like they do TV, Radio & Press.” Now, “It is now time for the old guard, the ‘Rock Tsars’ to either get with the programme or get out of the way”, say Jacqui and band mate Johnny Navarro in a follow-up, going on > > > If a millionaires club like the FAC is given the power to speak for artists, it needs to be made clear that they don’t speak for all of us. It is heart breaking, for example, to see folks reply on a2f2a that they “would support Jon if they hadn’t been out of work for a year”. That is the real voice of 2010. What on earth do people like Bono, Lily Allen & the FAC know about today’s struggle for survival? How DARE they suppose to lecture us on the “rights of musicians” with their pompous culture of entitlement? Billy Bragg wants proof that a band can survive with the help of their fans? Well, here we are mate — 100% Rock ‘n’ Roll from London and now fully engaged in a bid to survive in just that way. But so hung up on money are the “Rock Tsars” that they don’t even see that support and help for artists can come in many other forms. Many of our fans have and will support our art financially, others will give their TIME, others will give their SKILLS and they will do this for free. Obviously doing something for nothing is an alien concept to people who are constantly pampered and spoiled by their owners. And this brings us to an even more important point. No one should now use the  term “unsigned band” because it is now meaningless and the very phrase reinforces the notion that record labels are the arbiters of taste and that without them a band is somehow inferior in some way! It is an offensive notion and an offensive phrase. But it is just these kind of false ideas that the FAC and their ilk have a vested interest in propping up. Ex Gang Of Four member Dave Allen puts it best. “Get over sucking on the Music Nanny State teat. Now that the internet has provided disrupting producers with all the tools they need to bypass the existing recorded music system, there should be NO EXCUSE for musicians not to go it alone. Yet, the producers – the musicians themselves, remain the problem. I believe the safety and comfort offered to them in the past – record label deals, publishing deals, old media distribution, plus MTV and commercial radio for the most successful – created a diabolical Nanny state”. “There is a worldwide recession and we have met so many people in the last year as we CwF’s at gigs who are in the same boat”, say Jacqui and Johnny, adding: “How the FAC members can swan about acting like it is still the baby-boom years is beyond us. What they need to realise is that the whole world is struggling for survival. “So why shouldn’t they?” [Devilish Presley interview: http://lipstattoo.wordpress.com/2010/02/19/dp/ ---- Band website (with donate button ) http://www.devilishpresley.com ] [This article first appeared in a2f2a.com ] Jon Newton – p2pnet - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi February, 2010 Use free p2pnet newsfeeds for your site. ‘Free VP8 and use it on YouTube’

// February 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // p2p

p2pnet view P2P | Advertising:- Giant online advertising company Google snapped up ON2 Technologies, the creators of high-quality video compression technology, for  $106.5 million, said p2pnet last August. On2’s technology powers client online and desktop apps including Adobe, Skype, Nokia, Infineon, Sun Microsystems, Mediatek, Sony, Brightcove, and Move Networks, said ReelSEO . “That’s a pretty big list of heavy hitters”. Indeed. But, “With its purchase of the On2 video compression technology company having been completed on Wednesday February 16, 2010, Google now has the opportunity to make free video formats the standard, freeing the web from both Flash and the proprietary H.264 codec”, says the Free Software Foundation in an open letter, going on > > > Dear Google, With your purchase of On2, you now own both the world’s largest video site (YouTube) and all the patents behind a new high performance video codec — VP8. Just think what you can achieve by releasing the VP8 codec under an irrevocable royalty-free license and pushing it out to users on YouTube? You can end the web’s dependence on patent-encumbered video formats and proprietary software (Flash). To sit on this technology or merely use it as a bargaining chip would be a disservice to the free world, while bringing at best limited short-term benefits to your company. To free VP8 without recommending it to YouTube users would be a wasted opportunity and damaging to free software browsers like Firefox. We all want you to do the right thing. Free VP8, and use it on YouTube! Why this would be amazing The world would have a new free format unencumbered by software patents. Viewers, video creators, free software developers, hardware makers — everyone — would have another way to distribute video without patents, fees, and restrictions. The free video format Ogg Theora was already at least as good for web video ( see a comparison ) as its nonfree competitor H.264, and we never did agree with your objections to using it. But since you made the decision to purchase VP8, presumably you’re confident it can meet even those objections, and using it on YouTube is a no-brainer. You have the leverage to make such free formats a global standard. YouTube is the world’s largest video site, home to nearly every digital video ever made. If YouTube merely offered a free format as an option, that alone would bring support from a slew of device makers and applications. This ability to offer a free format on YouTube, however, is only a tiny fraction of your real leverage. The real party starts when you begin to encourage users’ browsers to support free formats. There are lots of ways to do this. Our favorite would be for YouTube to switch from Flash to free formats and HTML, offering users with obsolete browsers a plugin or a new browser (free software, of course). Apple has had the mettle to ditch Flash on the iPhone and the iPad — albeit for suspect reasons and using abhorrent methods (DRM) — and this has pushed web developers to make Flash-free alternatives of their pages. You could do the same with YouTube, for better reasons, and it would be a death-blow to Flash’s dominance in web video. But even some smaller actions would also have an impact. You could interest users with HD videos in free formats, for example, or aggressively invite users to upgrade their browsers (instead of upgrading Flash). Steps like these on YouTube would quickly push browser support for free formats to 50% and beyond, and they would slowly increase the number of people who never bother installing Flash. If you care about free software and the free web (a movement and medium to which you owe your success) you must take bold action to replace Flash with free standards and free formats. Patented video codecs have already done untold harm to the web and its users, and this will continue until we stop it. Because patent-encumbered formats were costly to incorporate into browsers, a bloated, ill-suited piece of proprietary software (Flash) became the de facto standard for online video. Until we move to free formats, the threat of patent lawsuits and licensing fees hangs over every software developer, video creator, hardware maker, web site and corporation — including you. You can use your purchase of On2 merely as a bargaining chip to achieve your own private solution to the problem, but that’s both a cop-out and a strategic mistake. Without making VP8 a free format, it’s just another video codec. And what use is another video format with patent-limited browser support? You owe it to the public and to the medium that made you successful to solve this problem, for all of us, forever. Organizations like Xiph, Mozilla, Wikimedia, the FSF, and even On2 itself have recognized the need for free formats and fought hard to make it happen. Now it’s your turn. We’ll know if you do otherwise that your interest is not user freedom on the web, but Google’s dominance. “We all want you to do the right thing”, says the FSF, adding: “Free VP8, and use it on YouTube!” (Cheers, Frank) - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi p2pnet - Google gobbles up ON2, August 7, 2009 ReelSEO – Google Gets ON2 Video Compression, August 6, 2009 Free Software Foundation – Open letter to Google: free VP8, and use it on YouTube, February 19, 2010 Use free p2pnet newsfeeds for your site. Canada targeted by the IIPA. Again.

p2pnet view P2P | Politics:- “The IIPA has published its usual criticism of Canada, but buried within the submission is a preliminary report that Canada’s business software piracy rate has declined yet again”, blogged Michael Geist recently.  “The report indicates there is a 2% to decline, to 30%, a record low.” However, says Digital Copyright Canada ’s Russell McOrmond in a comment, “I realise why you use their own statistics against them, but we have to be careful not to lend them any credibility.” He goes on, “The reality is that their methodologies don’t differentiate between infringement and lawful market trends including market failures and people switching to legal alternatives to BSA member software. “I suspect that out of those three the least significant or changing factor in the past decade has been infringement, with the error in their statistics easily being larger than the actual rate of infringement.” Our ‘regrettable but well-deserved reputation’ Almost exactly a year ago, “Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and US president Barack Obama are scheduled for a sit-down tomorrow and according to the Toronto Star , with Obama will be, ‘a raft of his most powerful political deputies’,” said p2pnet, going on > > > The pow-wow will kick off with a “15-minute one-on-one meeting,” then a “restricted” meeting with senior officials, followed by a working lunch with officials, says CTV . At the top of the agenda will be the worsening economic crisis and given that Hollywood and the Big 4 record labels claim world economies depend on them and their ‘product,’ will the double act of Tom Perrelli and Don Verrilli, two RIAA henchman who are now among those in charge of the US Department of Justice, be included in Obama’s entourage? And if they are, will Canada’s, “regrettable but well-deserved reputation as a safe haven for Internet pirates” be included in topics for discussion? According to entertainment industry’s International Intellectual Property Alliance(IIPA) ’special’ 301 ‘report,’ “A number of the world’s most notorious and prolific BitTorrent sites for online piracy are hosted or have operators based in Canada.” Now, in its 2010 release Copyright Industries Urge Greater Global Protection of American Jobs and Exports Threatened by Piracy the IIPA recommends 10 countries be placed on the Priority Watch List in 2010″, the offending named as: Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Mexico, People’s Republic of China, the Philippines and Russia. ‘Canada has taken no meaningful steps … ‘ The IIPA, short for International Intellectual Property Alliance, is another corporate entertainment industry front organisation with special ties to the US Trade Representative’s office, which often acts for, and in the interests of, Hollywood and the Big 4 organised music record labels. BSA (Business Software Alliance) companies are also dues-paying members. “Canada has taken no meaningful steps toward modernizing its copyright law to meet the global minimum standards of the WIPO Internet Treaties, which it signed more than a decade ago”, says the IIPA, also stating: “The government’s top leaders acknowledged many of these deficiencies and announced their intention to reform the copyright law over three years ago. Yet today there is not even a reform bill pending in the Canadian parliament.” Says McOrmond in Digital Copyright Canada > > > The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) tipped their hand a bit in this years submission to the “Special 301″ report process. While they again attacked Canada for having strong copyright law that is different than the USA, the most telling was their opposition to policies encouraging legally free of charge Open Source in their submissions for Brazil , India , Indonesia , Philippines , Thailand , and Vietnam . Encouraging legally free software is by far the best policy instrument to reduce software copyright infringement for the less financially rich countries and individuals of the world. For the vast majority of the worlds population the only viable options are to infringe royalty-based software or switch to royalty-free alternatives. The fact the IIPA is encouraging countries to have policies which increase infringement rather than have people switch to competing software is telling about their actual goals. “This is consistent with what past Microsoft business group president Jeff Raikes previously stated , “If they’re going to pirate somebody, we want it to be us rather than somebody else’,” he adds. Raikes was, of course, merely parroting a statement originally made by Microsoft supremo Bill Gates . As p2pnet reported back in 2004, Gates was talking to business school students at the University of Washington and was quoted in the the July 20, 1998, Fortune Magazine as saying: “Although about three million computers get sold every year in China, people don’t pay for the software. Someday they will, though. And as long as they’re going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They’ll get sort of addicted, and then we’ll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade.” This is, of course, the next decade. - … .. … and identi.ca More First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win ~ Mahatma Gandhi Michael Geist – Canadian Software Piracy Rate Drops 2% To Record Low, February 19, 2010 Digital Copyright Canada – IIPA would rather people “pirate” than switch to legal competitors, February 21, 2010 p2pnet – TCPA | Palladium.
